Cass Baumer, host of the infamous #BaumerReport sat across from Kenzi on one of the soundstages at Circle Television Network studios in Los Angeles. The two women were dressed for the occasion, looking business casual…despite the undercurrent of tension between them because of their upcoming confrontation in Fucking Awesome Wrestling on Sunday.
Cass gave Kenzi a knowing wink as she started the interview. She turned to the camera and addressed the fans at home. “Hello, I am Cass Baumer and I am sitting here today with professional wrestler, singer, and star of television and film, Kenzi Grey.” She paused with a slight shake of her head as her intense blue eyes widened, “That is certainly a lot of accolades for a girl of your age!”
Kenzi gave a rye and dismissive chuckle, “No more than you’ll have after next month when your movie hits theaters.”
Cass grinned at this, nodding as she remembered the June release of ‘Silent, but Deadly.’ She made a mental note to herself to discuss that before the interview concluded. “First of all, congratulations on the success of ‘All That Glitters!’ The movie is doing very well in the box office. Can you tell us a little about it?”
Kenzi sits forward, eager to discuss her film. “Yeah! It’s an adaptation of stories between Katie Anderson, the lead…and myself. It’s the tale of a small town girl that comes to the big city, hoping to make her mark, but instead she finds herself in over her head after she runs into my character, Justina Caine…”
Cass cuts in, “Before you go on, I wanted to ask you about your character’s name, Justina Marcia Caine…JMC? There was a rumor floating around in the internet that it wasn’t a coincidence. The word is that you intentionally named your character that as a dig at the woman who tried to run you out of professional wrestling last year.” She eyed Kenzi, “Any truth to that rumor?”
Kenzi takes a deep breath before she answers. “I am not going to sit here and lie to you. I did play around with my character’s name at the start of this project and yes…it was meant done to evoke memories of the character’s namesake.” She paused, shrugging. “I thought I had put all that excess baggage away after last year…but it got brought back up again when Farrah Martell came to LAW spewing all this horseshit about getting revenge for what I’d done to JMC…how I’d forced her out of the industry.”
Cass nodded as she interjected, “Because you contend that you never did any such thing?” Cass arches her brow, “Though…she’s gone and you’re still here…”
Kenzi starts to answer immediately, then she pauses for a beat as if considering if what she was going to say was accurate or not. “You know, I never set out to run JMC off, but if she says that I did with my actions after we split, who am I to downplay her perception of things? If that is why she ran off, then I guess in her mind that is how it went down.” All she could do was shrug, “At the time when I was making the movie, all of this stuff had just been thrown in my face by Farrah and this character I was writing at the time was supposed to be this insanely vicious bitch…and all I could think was, I know who this person is…so I gave her that name...”
Cass looked at her, cocking her head to the side as she could see Kenzi toying with something else in her mind. “Is that it? Sure doesn’t seem like it.”
Kenzi sighed, “No. I wrote that character and I modeled her after JMC…or at least what I thought JMC was. A liar…a whore…a bitch. All of these emotions came out of me when I did it…but when I got in front of that camera and it was time to emote…to bring that person to life…all I could see was how much like her I truly was. The good and the bad…it was all the same.” She sniffed as she looked down at her hands, playing with them in her lap. “I guess, what I realized is that I was more like JMC than I ever cared to admit. As I started playing the character and really digging down deep…I started thinking that maybe…just maybe I was making her out to be the villain this whole time…when it wasn’t like I was much different.”
Cass started to move on, but Kenzi raised her hand and stopped her….
“Wait…” Kenzi took a deep breath and closed her eyes. When she finally opened them, she spoke in a measured tone. “I am not going to apologize for anything that went down back then because I can’t change any of it. All I can do is learn from it and try to grow…then move on. I thought I had moved on until her friends came around to pick at a wound that I thought had healed. If I had been smart…I would have ignored them and kept my focus on the here and now, but I didn’t…I fell right back into that time…I became that person that they all thought I was. As much as I cried about people like Farrah and others using my past to try to get the better of me…all I did was use it to draw out the worst.” She smiled a bit as the realization finally dawned on her. “I don’t have to live in the past anymore…because that is where people like Farrah Martel, Zoey Star, and Courtney Steele want me to live. I think it’s time that I finally started living in the now!” Kenzi shrugged her shoulders as if she had just unburdened herself of a great weight. “That film really helped me to move forward…and now I’m ready to finally move on.”
Cass grinned, eager to move on as well. “For you, film-wise, it looks like moving on is your next film…”
Kenzi corrected, “…your film…”
Cass countered once more, “…our film, Silent, but Deadly!”
Kenzi laughed, conceding to Cass’s assessment. “Yes…OUR film is next, but I don’t want anyone to be confused, this is totally your film…all from that crazy mind of yours, and I think it’s a marvelous premise for a horror movie. I really think that this is something that is going to really surprise people. It’s not made to be cheesy, though the title can certainly lead you to think that you’re about to get 2-hours of fart jokes.”
Cass glowered a bit as she frowned. “I really did consider changing the title.”
Kenzi folded her arms and gave Cass a frown of her own. “Now you’re just being like me! So worried about what the court of public opinion thinks that you can’t see the bigger picture. Yes, there are people out there that are going to trash what you do, either because they don’t like you personally, or they don’t like the fact that you are out in the world and you are living your life to the fullest! I have spent the last few months beating my head against the wall because people with agendas all wanted to come at me and drag me down so they could dance on my grave to feel better about how dead they were inside.” Kenzi shook her head, the smile returning, “I had to realize that I didn’t have to defend myself or my work…I just had to go out there and do what made me happy. This film…it’s what makes you happy Cass…and worry about people that want to rob you of it…is just giving them what they want. You need to give them what you want…a first class film that is going to set the standard in the industry!”
Cass leaned over and patted Kenzi on her arm, apparently pleased with the words of encouragement. “Of course…you’re right, and I have no intention of changing a thing…however…there is still an elephant in the room that we need to deal with.” She took a deep breath of her own as she asked her next question; “You and I are friends…and we have worked on your television show together, and now this film…however, you and I have a date on the 7th of May in Fucking Awesome Wrestling. This will be a match between band mates…television show cast mates…and friends. After the way the match between Kate Steele and Stephanie McDiddle ended in such a bloody and brutal fashion a few nights ago…you’ve seemed a little hesitant about our meeting. Are you ready for this match…do you really even want to be in it?”
Kenzi wrung her hands a bit as she considered what Cass had said. Right up until the night that their band mates, Kate and Steph had fought, this had all seemed like nothing more than business. Things had gotten a bit more heated in the ring and Steph had borne the brunt of it; getting dropped on the corner of the steel steps and being left motionless. It had been sobering for Kenzi in a way she never expected. “Honestly Cass…no…I don’t want this match and I don’t want to be in it. I have never wanted to face any of my friends in the ring…I’m not wired that way. I guess that’s why in LAW, that’s hardly ever been a concern. They don’t like me…and I don’t like them. FAW is a different story…but I knew that going in. I signed the contract and whether I like it or not…I am going to have this match with you. All I can do is try not to let things get out of hand.”
Cass eyed Kenzi suspiciously, “Just remember…you promised…you’re not going to stab me in the back.” She gave a light chuckle, but her eyes told a different tale.
“Cass…I have no intention of cheating or doing anything underhanded in our match! I am trying to turn over a new leaf in FAW…I have a chance to do things better than I did when I signed with LAW. I intend to do just that!” Her mood darkened, “But in LAW? At LAW #62? I plan on cutting loose in that match against the Boardwalk Angels. All that fire and viciousness that you are concerned with…I’m saving that for those bitches!”
A look of concern crossed her face, “What about Sarah? Is she going to be with you on Sunday?” It was obvious that Cass was concerned about Kenzi’s girlfriend and any possible involvement there. Sarah had attacked Cass at a recent pay-per-view and she had mercilessly taunted and abused Cass over social media.
Despite herself, Kenzi smiled, not because of the abuse, but because Sarah had found a way to get inside Kenzi in a way that no one else ever had. “Sar is always going to be with me Cass…but you won’t have to worry about her getting involved in our match. I know that you two have your own problems to deal with.” Her smile turned especially dark, “But over in LAW…well…that is a different matter altogether I suppose. She won’t have any restraints on her when she teams with Kate and I in her debut match in LAW. With any luck…someone is going to get set on fire.”
Cass stared at Kenzi for a long couple of moments, then finally she gave an appreciable nod. “Well…I guess I’ll see you on Sunday then…”
