The scene opens to Gavin Grimes standing over a mice maze. Two mice are walking through it, taking different paths. Eventually one mouse finds it’s way out, when a couple of minutes later, the second finds it’s way out. Gavin grabs the two mice and puts them in a cage before looking at the camera and nodding.
“Those two different mice took two different paths but ended up with the same result. One took long but he still found his way out. This reminds me of what Bryan said when he was telling me to stay in my lane. He thinks that accomplished everything too fast. The success, the winning streak, the heavyweight championship and getting the girl. A lot of you think he’s right. But me?”
Gavin rolls his eyes and shakes his head.
“He’s dead wrong. You claim to know me and then you go and show everyone that you don’t know shit. You think I’m that mouse that found the fastest route to escape, you think that I shot right up to the top like a rocket. But nah, that’s not what happened at all. I trained at Nightfall for THREE years. Some folks like your ex-girlfriend Rayven, train for less than a year, make a debut and then win the big title.”
“So maybe you got confused in your old age because you see, I trained and I trained and I trained until I was ready to make my debut. Then? Then I earned everything I received. You think I rushed into my marriage because I’m a little damage? Maybe if you did your homework, you would know that Ash and I make each other better. But you know better from experience, right? This coming from the guy who’s old as fuck and still hasn’t settled down. This coming from the guy who didn’t even realize he had a daughter until she was an adult. The guy who masks his issues and insecurities with joke after joke.”
“You’re a fucking child and everyone knows it. But here you are, trying to play it up that you’re a serious guy, trying to play up your so-called ‘experience’. The thing is, you don’t have shit on me. You think you’re tearing me down? Please. You know what I think? I think that you wish you were me. You wish you earned things like I did but you never had to really work a day in your life. That kid who dreamed of having a Maserati and then got one at 16? That’s not me you’re talking about, you’re talking about yourself.”
Gavin laughs and shrugs.
“But oh yeah, Bryan Sweet lost his first FIVE matches. So I guess you did have to work to get to the top in wrestling, right? Or was it because you didn’t take it seriously at first? Was it because you were used to having everything handed to you and for the first time in your life, you had to put in work? Because me? I showed up to Portland a nobody, an underdog, and I won my first six matches, which nobody expected. I was the first man to pin the monster, Ramsay Bodach. People doubted me, just like you are right now. You think I’m not ready to sit at your ‘man’ table?”
Gavin laughs before walking over to a table and grabbing a bottle of chocolate Nesquik. He opens up the bottle and drinks some before setting the bottle down and smiling.
“I don’t give a fuck about your Johnny Walker. I don’t care if you think I’m not ready. Because the difference between you and I? You’re the one living in a fantasy world. You think I want to be the next Bryan Sweet? While i respect what you’ve done, I don’t want to be the next you or anyone else. All I care about being is Gavin Grimes. If that means being remembered as the NGW Heavyweight Champion or the kid who took Portland Pro by storm… Even if that means being known as the kid who was down on his luck as a teenager but ended up fighting for a second chance on life… Or it could even mean being Ashleigh Grimes’ husband... “
He smiles widely at the last sentence and shrugs.
“I’m fine with that. Because you know what? I am all of those things. All that matters to me is that I came to the ring and I gave more than 100% every time. I don’t care what people think. People will remember me for something differently and I accept that. But as for you, Bryan? You’re going to remember me for the guy who earned this victory and everything he's ever gotten. You’re going to remember me as the guy who beat you in your last match ever.”
