The scene opens up with Gavin Grimes sitting down on his couch in his living room. He’s watching a video package of Bryan Sweet matches, including his recent match with Dirk Bentley. Gavin takes his remote and hits pause before looking up at the camera with a smile on his face.
“You know, I found it interesting that Bryan brought up my past. He told my story by using it as a correlation to the story about a little orphan girl named Annie. Thanks Bryan, Annie is a legendary story, just like the story of Gavin Grimes is. You see, people know my story… They know who I am. But you?”
Gavin laughs and shakes his head before standing up and keeping his gaze on the camera.
“You’re just an old relic that hardly anybody remembers. The only person who finds you relevant right now is Dirk Bentley and needless to say, that isn’t something to write home about. And while your victory over Dirk might make you think that you still got it, let me remind you and everyone else that that’s not the same Dirk I fought a year ago. That’s the Dirk who had his knee busted by Ashleigh, my wife.”
“Shit, I’m watching tape of you now and comparing it to your stuff from years ago and it’s obvious you’ve slowed down. While you won’t admit it, while you claim you haven’t lost a step, that’s all just a lie. You’re in your mid thirties and you’ve been doing nothing since retirement besides drink alcohol and fuck women, including ones the same age as your newly discovered daughter. Wow, you’re really living the life, aren’t you?”
Gavin scoffs and rolls his eyes.
“What I found the most interesting about your promo is how you said that your past should stay there, in your past. Yet, you brought all of mine up. If you wanted it to stay there, then why’d you bring mine up instead of focusing on me here and now? I’m just wondering but to be honest, I think you’re completely wrong. The past is a reminder of who we used to be, it’s a way to motivate.”
“That’s why I’m still one of the best alive, that’s why I still compete. But you? You’ve been retired for years because you lost your motivation. You’ve had it all your whole life. You’re a rich kid that’s been given the world and you wrestled because it was fun. I do it to fucking survive. That’s the difference between you and me. The reason my past gets brought up is because it makes me who I am, it inspires me to be better than the people who I came from.”
“But you? A guy who’s constantly been handed anything he’s ever wanted? Of course the past isn’t relevant for you. But your past is the reason you can’t stay focused on one thing for very long. Once you’ve had your taste, your fill of something, you’re ready to move onto the next quick fix. What was your conquest with Rayven? Taking her virginity most likely? Once you got that, you got bored of her pretty fast, right?”
Gavin chuckles and shakes his head.
“It’s just like wrestling. Once you had the taste of being on top, you got bored pretty quickly and you moved on. But doing that? It was the right move. You watched your colleagues like Dirk Bentley become a fucking joke.At least when you were both pros at the same time he was somewhat respected. But now? Every laughs at him. Just like they’d be laughing at you if you were still a pro. You’re all fucking talk. You’ve always been talk.”
“I don’t want this match to prop myself up. Because you see, the thing is, I already am propped up. Every company out there would kill to have Gavin Grimes on their roster. FAW is hosting this match because of ME, not because of YOU. Nah, I want this match to shut you the fuck up. To make you realize that you can’t hang anymore. You’re no longer the cream of the crop, I am.”
“So you can go ahead and make your fake Annie musicals or do whatever it is you have to do to mock me or make fun of me, at the end of the day, I’m going to be the one nailing you with The Crowning and pinning you for the three count. That being said, the past does matter, just not in the way you think it does. You see, my past inspires me… But you? You’re trying to hold onto what little of your past you can. But when I beat you, you’ll see that your career is dead and gone.”
